Our Listener – Jane, Lancashire

“Finding balance, purpose and a working life that finally fits.

Jane’s story begins in a very different industry from the one she works in today. For many years she built her career in aerospace, a field that demands accuracy, focus and a strong ability to research and solve problems. She enjoyed that challenge, but over time the long hours and constant pressure began to overshadow the rest of her life. She reached a point where flexibility mattered more than climbing further up a traditional career path. She wanted work that still used her strengths but also allowed space for the things that made life feel fuller.

During that transition, she came across Way With Words. What caught her attention first was the company’s reputation for high standards, confidentiality, and professionalism. The application process was thorough, which she appreciated, because it signalled that the work would be taken seriously. When she was accepted eight years ago, she felt both relief and excitement. Transcription offered the balance she was searching for; while still giving her a place to use the structured thinking and attention to detail she had developed in aerospace.

Outside work, Jane keeps an active and grounded routine. She has played netball for years and now enjoys walking netball as part of a local team. She goes to the gym regularly, attends fitness classes and makes time for the things she genuinely enjoys, such as reading, gardening, and listening to music. These parts of her day give her the energy and clarity she needs to approach each new transcription project with focus.

Her experience over the years has shown her how much human transcribers still matter in a world that now leans heavily on AI. She estimates that around seventy percent of AI-generated transcripts still need substantial correction. Context is usually the missing piece. AI may recognise a place name correctly at the start of a file but then get it wrong later when the audio becomes unclear or a speaker mumbles. A human listener notices these inconsistencies, checks them, researches them, and makes sure the final document reflects what was truly said. To Jane, that is the core difference: human care and accountability.

She believes a great transcriber or editor is someone who combines strong grammar and punctuation skills with patience, good listening ability, and a readiness to research anything uncertain. Accuracy is rarely accidental; it comes from small, consistent habits and a genuine sense of responsibility.

Some recordings have stayed with her long after she submitted the final transcript. She’s worked on many thought-provoking projects involving medical research and marine conservation, but one stands out more than the rest. It was an HR investigation into drug-store procedures after a lung cancer patient nearly received a fatal morphine overdose. Even without confidential details, the seriousness of the situation made a deep impression. It reminded her how much accurate documentation matters in environments where people’s wellbeing depends on clear communication and accountability.

Our Listeners Way With Words

Looking back on eight years with Way With Words, Jane describes the experience positively and without hesitation. The flexibility has allowed her to build a healthier work-life balance. The variety of projects has kept her interested and learning. And the professionalism and support from the team have made the work feel valued, not invisible.

What started as a search for a better way to work has become a meaningful part of her life. Jane found a role where her skills make a real difference and where the work supports, rather than overwhelms, the person she wants to be.
